Most visitors to Scotland from the South charge on up the M74, under the misapprehension that Scotland only starts North of Edinburgh and Glasgow, unaware that a few miles to their left is some of Scotland's most beautiful, undiscovered countryside in Dumfries and Galloway. Balcary Bay Hotel is located off the A 711 Dumfries- Kirkcudbright road, two miles out of Auchencairn Village along the Shore Road. Despite its northerly aspect, Galloway benefits from the Gulf stream, and enjoys a mild and long holiday season. The area has a rich variety of walks, along the coast, over hills and through forests. There is plenty of choice for golfers, nearby are several 9 and 18 hole golf courses, at Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Southerness and Dumfries. The outdoor enthusiast can also enjoy cycling, riding and birdwatching. The area also abounds with National Trust historic properties and with some of the loveliest gardens in Scotland along with specialist nurseries, provides a mecca for the garden lover.
