For seaside lovers, it's a shore thing: Beach huts may be glorified sheds - but they hold their value
By Fred Redwood
They're as much a part of the British seaside as deckchairs, donkeys, ice cream and 15 inches of rain.
A hangover from Victorian times, many beach huts are little more than glorified sheds somewhere to boil a kettle and store the windbreak.
Highly prized: Wooden beach huts like these in Southwold can fetch up to £120,000

Bob Soden is 60 and has just sold his hut after 15 years of visiting, rain, hail or shine, with his wife, Ann.
He knows what draws people there. 'It's about long, lazy days relaxing with friends,' he says.
'Our hut is on what is known as the champagne and strawberries end of the beach. Here the gin and tonics come out at midday.'
Bob had his beach hut on the market with Denisons for £120,000 a lot for a box measuring a mere 16ft by 11ft, which has no running water or bathroom facilities.
On the other hand, it is undeniably charming. 'People love getting back to nature,' says Bob.
Huts are usually sold leasehold with a ground rent also paid to the landowner.
